The prospect of joining the European Union is empowering to make important changes and achieve results. How? “Armenpress”– learns from Moldpres, this was announced by the President of Moldova, Maya Sandu, at the opening of the EU-Moldova summit in Brussels on June 22.

“We are doing even more than what is required of us, undertaking really difficult reforms to be ready for EU integration,” he declared.

According to the President, the opening of the first negotiating group was a historic moment for Moldova and provided an opportunity that should be fully used.

“It’s great to be back in Brussels with friends. Last Monday we started the first round of membership negotiations, “Core Values”, a moment of real opportunity. Such moments are rare, so we should make the most of them,” said Maya Sandu.

He emphasized that the prospect of joining the EU is the driving force of the reform process, and the Moldovan authorities are undertaking major changes to speed up the country’s European path.

The Moldova-EU Summit is a high-level dialogue format created by the two sides that reflects the ever-closer partnership between Moldova and the EU, as well as the country’s unwavering commitment to membership in the European Community. This year’s meeting comes a week after the official start of the accession negotiations on the first negotiating chapters, “Fundamental Values”, marking a new stage in the country’s European path. During the summit, the leaders will discuss the next steps of the negotiations and the reform agenda of Moldova.

The European Commission and the European Council have confirmed that Moldova is ready to start negotiations on all chapters as envisaged in the merit-based accession process.

The agenda of the summit will also include topics related to the regional situation, strengthening of cooperation in security and defense, energy, as well as EU support for Moldova’s economic development.

At the end of the meeting, the President of Moldova, Maya Sandu, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, will make joint press statements.

The Brussels summit is the second of its kind between Moldova and the European Union. The first high-level meeting took place in Chisinau on July 4, 2025.
