The large-scale attack on Moscow and the Moscow region on Thursday morning was Ukraine’s response to Russia’s recent strike on Kyiv, specifically the Pecheri Monastery complex in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
On June 15, as a result of a Russian attack, the roof of the Uspensky Cathedral caught fire in the Pecheri Monastery, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Five people were killed in the strikes in Kyiv.
Ukraine warned that it would respond to attacks and not sit back, Zelensky said.
“If Ukraine burns, your Moscow will also burn,” warned the Ukrainian president.
He also repeated the call to Russia to end the war previously expressed on the Telegram platform. However, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has not shown such a desire, Zelensky admitted, so he is calling on Western partners to increase sanctions pressure against Russia.
The massive drone attack on the Russian capital on Thursday morning was the biggest since the start of the war. The airstrikes set fire to a large oil refinery, sending huge clouds of black smoke, and disrupted commercial flights at Moscow airports.
