Mārtiņš Vaters, or simply Vaters, who is known to most Latvian music consumers as the voice of the rock group “Indygo”, released his latest solo song “Jūra”. It is the second of the two promised acoustic compositions, created in a special and personal project – the creative journey of Kurzeme.
Both compositions of this series were created at the end of August 2025, when Vater went on a several-day trip along The coast of Kurzeme. This journey, which has acquired the symbolic name “Creative Kurzeme”, took me in twists and turns from Cape Kolka to Ugāle Mill and from Ventspils to the Lithuanian border.
“While spending the night in a hammock in various forest locations and under the roofs of friends’ properties, music was created that serves as a pure moment – an improvisation of thoughts and words about the unique feelings of that moment,” says the musician. The latest track “The Sea” is Vater’s personal confession of love for the Baltic Sea and its changing power.
The musical material created by Vater’s solo performances is diverse in genres – it is both energetic rock music and lyrical acoustic songs, as well as instrumental music for short films. “The Sea” would best fit the last of these genre descriptions, except it’s not instrumental. Although both compositions of “Creative Kurzeme” are kept in a subdued manner, the author emphasizes that this does not mark the only direction in his future creativity.
“Music is huge, and you have to do it without limiting yourself,” Vaters says.
The listeners are invited to get to know the whole story of the trip and listen to the composition “Sadness”, which was Vater’s first composition of the “Creative Kurzeme” cycle.
