An unusual and powerful artistic performance took place before Barcelona Cathedral, where they were thrown from a helicopter 100,000 livčinjand with written poetry dedicated to freedom. It is a project of the Chilean art collective “Casagrande” (Casagrande), transmits “An Ara.”
The main idea of this performance is to evoke through art the unpleasant moments of the past and in some way to redefine the air space with something beautiful and noble.
The location is chosen with strong symbolism
The location of the “poetic bombing”, which took place in the famous Gothic Quarter right in front of the cathedral itself, was deliberately chosen to recall the damage and suffering caused in this area in the 1930s.
During the Spanish Civil War, from 1937 to 1939, Barcelona suffered as many as 1,903 aerial bombardments, in which more than 2,700 people died and over 7,000 were injured.
Some places around the Cathedral are some of the hardest hit zones. During the two air raids in 1938, the first wave killed 42 people, 20 of whom were children, while just a few months later, in a three-day brutal attack, the same quarter was hit again, in which hundreds of residents lost their lives.
100 authors sent a message of freedom
This was the tenth anniversary edition of the “bombing” series of the “Casagrande” collective, which has so far carried out similar performances in nine other cities around the world. A total of 100 authors were involved in this action – 50 from Chile and 50 from Catalonia.
The poems were dropped from a helicopter, printed in the form of bookmarks, so that passers-by and visitors could easily catch them in the air and take them for themselves. All the poetry is written in Spanish and Catalan, and the lyrics carry deep messages about freedom, remembrance and the consequences of war.
