When the movie Black Cat, White Cat and Emir Kusturica is mentioned, one of the first associations for many is the eccentric and unforgettable Dadan Carambolo, a character masterfully played by Srđan Žika Todorović.
However, it is little known that another actor was originally planned for this role – the legendary Dragan Nikolić.
As Todorović told in an interview, only a few weeks before the start of filming, there was a big change in the division of roles.
“Three weeks before the start of the recording, Gaga couldn’t, didn’t want to or didn’t.” Kusturica gutted something, in any case he says to me: ‘Žika, you will play Dadan’. “My legs were cut off, roughly the same as when Dragojević offered me to play the devil.” the actor recalled in an interview.
Todorović was originally slated for a second role in the film, while Dadan was intended for Dragan Nikolić. Although it was never fully clarified why the collaboration between Nikolić and Emir Kusturica did not take place on this project, it turned out that the change brought one of the most impressive characters of domestic cinema.
It is also interesting that the film hides a detail that many viewers did not notice. In one scene, Dadan is speaking in front of a photo of his late father, and on the wall is actually a photo of Zika’s real father, the famous actor Bora Todorović. That little movie stunt further enriched the story and became one of the interesting things that fans are still discovering today.
The film Black Cat, White Cat premiered in 1998, directed by Emir Kusturica. This black comedy set on the banks of the Danube follows a series of bizarre events, scams, love affairs and conflicts between local criminals, and over time it has gained cult status throughout the region and Europe.
It was Dadan Carambolo who remained one of the most beloved characters from the film. His energy, eccentricity, unpredictable outbursts and numerous lines made the role of Srdjan Žika Todorović be remembered as one of the best in his career.
