Serena Williams ended her four-year hiatus with a win
American tennis star Serena Williams returned to the tennis courts with a victory after four years. The forty-four-year-old American together with the Canadian Victoria Mboka in the 1st round of the tournament at the Queen’s Club in London defeated the third seeds, Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
The American-Canadian connection won 7:6 (2) and 6:2, and Serena Williams reminded of her best times with strong serves. The winner of 23 Grand Slam tournaments ended her career four years ago, but recently surprised by announcing that she will compete in the doubles competition in West London.
First time at Queen’s Club
Serena Williams last competed at the US Open in 2022 and has now sparked suggestions that she could also play in the singles competition at Wimbledon.
“It was a lot of fun to play with Victoria. I’ve never played here before, only men have always competed here. So it’s a little more special feeling to play at a legendary venue,” Serena Williams told AFP.
She got bored
“I had nothing better to do. I was tired of sitting at home. Children don’t have school in the summer, so I thought, why not,” explained the American, who was also encouraged from the stands by alpine skier Lindsey Vonn.
Williams, who will also play doubles in Berlin from June 15-21, has not won a singles Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open.
