Education Minister Octavia Alfred has announced that 124 students who sat this year’s Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) in Dominica earned scholarships. The announcement was made on Friday during the official release of the 2026 results.
“This year scholarships were awarded to students who obtained 18, 19 and 20 points and those who obtained 16 to 17 points received bursaries as was done in previous years,” Alfred explained. She confirmed that 67 girls and 57 boys received scholarships, while 122 students qualified for bursaries — 71 girls and 51 boys.
Alfred noted that identifying top students or schools was difficult this year, as the assessment focused on individual performance rather than competition.
“This is not a competition, this is about ensuring that Dominican children all reach their full potential,” she said. “We cannot compare schools, because they do not operate on a level playing field.”
She added that 46 of the island’s 57 primary schools had students who received scholarships or bursaries. Each child will receive a report sheet, which parents can collect at their respective schools.
The minister expressed satisfaction with the performance of boys in this year’s assessment.
“We are very glad this year that our boys performed just as well as our girls. I want to say Dominica is coming out of the statistics that showed that girls outperformed boys. Well done, well done. And let us continue to work so that we do not return from whence we came,” Alfred stated.
