INTERNATIONAL fuel prices have started to ease, but any reduction in local fuel prices will depend on assessments by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Speaking to this masthead after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, Mr Rabuka said ministers had been informed that global fuel prices were beginning to decline following recent market volatility.
“Prices have started to come down, but because the prices of the oil that are now with the distributors in Fiji were bought at a higher price, we will allow the FCCC to make that call,” Mr Rabuka said.
He said Cabinet had received an update from fuel companies through the National Fuel Controller, Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau, regarding the country’s fuel supply situation.
“It was just an update from the fuel companies to the National Fuel Controller, that’s the honourable Minister for Works, to say that supplies are steady, there’s no threat to that.”
The Prime Minister described the Cabinet meeting as brief, with discussions focused mainly on fuel supplies and two fisheries-related submissions.
“It was a very short meeting.
“Another one was just two other papers from fisheries, and they are straightforward ones, to do with security of our industry, as well as environment.”
