On June 22-26, the delegation of the Union of Armenian Communities will participate in the “United cities and local authorities” held in Tangier, Morocco. Eurasia” organization’s world congress, which this year is being held under the title “The new generation of universal local public services”.

The Armenian delegation consists of Armen Harutyunyan, the general director of the Union of Armenian Communities, and Garik Sargsyan, the head of the Vedi community.
“Unified cities and local governments. Eurasia” is the Eurasian regional branch of the global organization “United Cities and Local Governments” (UCLG). The global organization unites more than 240 thousand cities, communities, regions and metropolises from 140 countries of the world, representing the interests of more than 70 percent of the planet’s population. It is recognized by the United Nations as a key partner of local and regional authorities and played an important role in the creation of the “Sustainable Cities and Settlements” goal within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The World Congress in Tangier will host more than 3,000 local and regional leaders, mayors, governors, community council members, civil society representatives and international partners. The sessions of the General Assembly, the World Council and the Executive Bureau will take place within the framework of the Congress, during which the main decisions for the development of the international community movement in the coming years will be taken.
The event also provides an opportunity for regional structures to present their priorities, best practices and innovative solutions in the field of local self-government. The participants will have the opportunity to discuss the current challenges facing the communities, as well as to present successful initiatives and development models.
Armen Harutyunyan, General Director of the Union of Communities of Armenia, will address the key role of communities in the development of the state, strengthening of democracy and ensuring sustainable progress. He will present the development experience of Armenian communities, achievements and development prospects of recent years, emphasizing that strong communities are the basis of a strong and competitive state.
The speech built around the idea of ”A strong community is the key to a strong country” will also present initiatives aimed at the development of local self-government, increasing the efficiency of community management, improving public services and improving the quality of life of citizens.
Garik Sargsyan’s speech will be dedicated to Armenia’s practical experience in climate planning and adaptation. In particular, he will present the results of the implementation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development “Green Cities” project, within the framework of which, in cooperation with GCoM (Global Covenant of Mayors), action plans for adaptation to climate change were developed and implemented in a number of Armenian cities. This experience demonstrates the effective combination of international cooperation and local solutions in strengthening the climate resilience of communities.
“Unified cities and local governments. “Eurasia” organization represents the interests of local and regional authorities of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia, covering a huge geographical area with a population of about 300 million. The headquarters of the organization is located in Kazan.
