US President Donald Trump on Tuesday on Truth Social announced that it would extend the ceasefire with Iran until Iran presents a proposal to end the conflict definitively.
As a justification, Trump wrote, “Given that the Iranian government is, not surprisingly, deeply divided, and that General Asim Munir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have asked us to suspend the attack on Iran until their leaders and representatives come up with a unified proposal.”
Donald Trump also said he had ordered the US military to “continue the blockade and in all other respects remain ready and in a state of readiness for action”.
He needed to extend the ceasefire because its validity would expire in the next few hours. Trump said so recently, a few hours before the recent announcement CNBCthat he does not expect an extension to the cease-fire that expires on Wednesday, but that the United States will make a “great deal” with Iran to end the weeks-long war.
The warring parties had previously both planned to go to Pakistan for another round of talks, but Iran indicated on Monday that this however, he does not plan to attendafter the US, for the first time in the conflict, seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship after it tried to pass through the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Iran’s foreign minister says the blockade is an “act of war” and violates the ceasefire. Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday morning for the talks, but his trip was ultimately postponed and instead he and other key officials are gathering at the White House for talks.
In the war with Iran, the United States used up so many weapons in just a few weeks that it will take years to replenish stocks, which China will be most happy about.
