The Tunisian Football Federation fired coach Sabri Lamouchi following the 1-5 defeat suffered by the African team against Sweden, in the first round of Group F of the 2026 World Cup.
The 54-year-old French coach had taken office at the beginning of 2026, but in five games he had only managed one victory, and in the early hours of this Monday, June 15, he suffered his third defeat.
This is a rare case in football World Cups and it happens for the fourth time, and for the second time it involves Tunisia, since, at the 1998 World Cup in France, Poland’s Henryk Kasperczak was removed after the first two games, when he lost to England (0-2) and Colombia (0-1), which resulted in elimination before the third and final round of the group stage.
The other two cases were also at the 1998 World Cup, with Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira being fired from Saudi Arabia after losing games with Denmark (0-1) and hosts France (0-4); while Cha Bum-kun was fired from South Korea after losing 1-3 to Mexico and being beaten (0-5) by the Netherlands.
It should be noted that Tunisia now has a very complicated qualification, having to play against Japan and the Netherlands.
