A total of 17 people were killed and 45 others injured in traffic accidents across Cambodia during the three-day Khmer New Year holiday, according to a report from the National Police.
These figures represent incidents that occurred during a period of nationwide travel, as millions of Cambodians celebrated the traditional festival from April 14 to 16.
On April 14, authorities recorded six traffic accidents, which led to five deaths and six injuries as people began travelling for the holiday. On April 15, the second day of the holiday, incidents increased, with nine accidents across the country. These crashes claimed six lives and left 14 people injured. On April 16, the number of accidents rose to 12, resulting in six fatalities and 25 injuries. In total, 27 traffic accidents were reported over the three-day period.
Authorities have not yet provided further details on the causes of the accidents. However, road safety is often a concern during national holidays due to increased travel, congestion, and risky driving behaviour.
