As part of the railway expansion on the western route between Linz and Wels, a new bridge was raised over the Wels motorway (A25) between Wels and Marchtrenk at the weekend. In the future, tracks 3 and 4 of the high-performance line will run over the 1,800-ton colossus. The work represents a milestone in the upgrading of the railway section, which is to have four tracks by 2031.
Since May 2025, work has been underway to assemble the steel structure at an assembly site next to the route in the Wels-Maxlhaid area. In the middle of this week, work began on pushing the entire bridge into its final position over the A25 – a mammoth task with a total length of 93.36 meters, a span of 90 meters and a width of 14.55 meters. Shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, the last section was successfully completed and the bridge was brought to its final position with millimeter precision.
A special slideway technology that works with a hydraulic fluid system with nitrogen support ensured that friction was reduced and controlled movement was possible. The A25 was closed at the weekend for the movement. However, rail traffic managed without route closures and rail replacement services. The concreting work is to be completed in several construction phases and while traffic continues. Including concrete and reinforcement, the structure weighs 3,500 tons – which, according to ÖBB, is equivalent to 2,000 elephants. (APA)
