MIRI (June 15): Long Bemang, a 103-door Kayan longhouse in Middle Baram, was under nearly a metre of floodwater on Sunday, according to the Long Bemang Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Floodwaters have continued to inundate Kampung Long Bemang since Thursday afternoon, affecting 608 residents from 103 households in the flood-prone settlement.
Water levels stood at almost one metre as of 3.25pm, with conditions described as stable, according to a report from the volunteer fire brigade.
The report also noted that overcast skies were observed over the area at the time.
The flooding began at 3.45pm on Thursday. The Long Bemang Volunteer Fire Brigade attributed the inundation to continuous rainfall and the proximity of residential structures to the river.
“No evacuation to a Pusat Pemindahan Sementara (PPS) has been carried out,” the report stated, adding that affected residents have been urged to remain vigilant.
Authorities have not announced any immediate plans to activate temporary relief centres, though the situation is being closely monitored.
Residents in the affected area have been advised to exercise caution and remain alert to any changes in water levels.
Heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the Tinjar River has also caused flooding in villages downstream.
