Sky introduced channels with a lower delay for the World Cup

​Sky has introduced special low-latency channels for all TV stations broadcasting World Cup matches in Great Britain and Ireland.

The aim of this paper is to reduce the delay that users often notice when watching sports events via the Internet compared to a satellite signal.

The new option is available to users of Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices, who must select special “Real Time” channels to watch matches in near real time.

Protection from sports “spoilers”

Sky says this technology will help viewers avoid situations where they find out the result via social media, messages or neighbors’ reactions before the action is on screen.

Although users still report a delay of about five seconds compared to classic television transmission, it is significantly less than with standard internet streaming.

To use the service, an internet connection with a speed of at least 40 megabits per second is required.

More regional channels available

A total of 25 additional streams have been activated, including regional versions of BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, STV, UTV and ITV4, as well as RTÉ2 for viewers in Northern Ireland.

Sky, although it does not have the rights to broadcast the World Cup, also applies this technology to the channels of other broadcasters available on its platform, seeking to improve the experience of watching one of the biggest sporting events in the world, it states “informiTV“.
