Potter was cheered five times in his first World Cup match as Sweden’s national team captain and didn’t have much to complain about after the final whistle.
“So happy for the players. The goal we conceded was relatively cheap, but overall it was solid,” he told SVT.
The attacking duo of Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak were particularly pleased. That Sweden has had two world-class players for a long time was clear on this opening night in Monterrey. They were involved in most of the action up front and both ended up on the scoresheet.
“We knew we had two guys up top who could hurt them,” Potter said.
“They haven’t played much together, so it will get better the more they play. It’s great for them to score; it confirms they are on the right track.”
Gyökeres acted as a forward when he was behind Alexander Isak’s 2–0 goal after half an hour of play.
A bit into the second half, the roles were reversed, when Isak stole the ball from a sloppy Tunisian defender and delivered the pass for Gyökeres’ 3–1 goal.
