Trump wishes the American team success in a phone call
US President Donald Trump made a phone call to his country’s soccer team, wishing it success in the World Cup, according to a video of the call published by the team on Friday, hours before its opening match against Paraguay.
“I’m calling you to tell you that you are a great man and a great coach,” Trump told Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino on Thursday evening in a video posted on social media.
The American president, who will not attend the national team’s opening match on Friday evening in Los Angeles, continued, “I know how good the players are. I think you have a good chance to win the title.”
Trump, who is not a football fan despite confirming that he will attend the World Cup, added, “I just wanted to wish you luck!”
Thirty-two years after the 1994 edition, which was held on American soil, Uncle Sam’s country is once again hosting the World Cup finals, in an unprecedented tournament that extends across three countries and includes 48 teams, including the American team, which is finally hoping to attract the attention of the masses.
Despite this, the men’s national team has never excelled in world championships, unlike the women’s team, which is a four-time world champion.
