SERIAN (June 13): Mastery of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and English among Sarawak’s younger generation is crucial to sustaining economic growth and strengthening the state’s competitiveness in the years ahead, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

The Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development said jobs created between now and 2030 would require expertise in STEM fields.

“If we are not in the science stream, we will be left behind. That is the reality.

“Therefore, we should not dismiss the importance of science or complain that mathematics is difficult,” he said when speaking at the closing of the ‘Randau Komuniti’ programme organised by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) at Kampung Menjau in Siburan.

In light of this, he urged parents and teachers to play a greater role in nurturing interest in STEM among children.

“They are the ones who will become our future leaders and carry Sarawak forward,” he added.

However, he continued to encourage students in the arts stream to pursue fields such as psychology or law.

Sagah also stressed that proficiency in English was important as it facilitates effective communication with foreign investors, which is crucial for economic development.

“Our dealings are no longer confined to our own people; we will be engaging with people from other countries.

“What we produce, the surplus will then be exported, for example electricity. We are already selling it to Kalimantan and Singapore, as well as Peninsular Malaysia, is also seeking to import from us,” he said.

Also present were Ukas director Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan and Siburan district officer Ranum Bari.
