What are the details of the initial understanding between Iran and America that is said to have been finalized? Why are the narratives of Iranian media and American media so different from each other?
Economy Online, Amir Mohammad Hosseini: While Iranian and American officials have announced that they are approaching a preliminary understanding or a temporary agreement, the exact details of this possible agreement are not yet known.
What has been published so far, rather than providing a clear picture of the final text, indicates the existence of two different narratives of the content of the negotiations; A narrative from the domestic and American media that sometimes differs significantly from each other.
One of the most important points of dispute is related to the issue of ceasefire and regional tensions. The American media reports the 60-day extension of the ceasefire on some fronts, including Lebanon, while the narratives published in Iran speak of a permanent cessation of hostilities on all fronts in the region.
In the nuclear field, the difference of narratives is also significant. According to the Axios report, Iran must reduce part of its enriched uranium reserves under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency. But domestic media emphasize that nuclear issues will be reviewed in the next stages of the negotiations and after the implementation of some economic commitments by the US.
Differences regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the maritime blockade, the release of Iran’s blocked financial resources, and the scope of lifting sanctions are also significant. While the US media mainly talks about limited and temporary concessions, domestic narratives report more extensive measures, including the release of $24 billion in financial resources and the beginning of the process of lifting oil and financial sanctions.
This difference of narratives shows that at the same time as the negotiations progress, the war of narratives to shape public opinion is also going on. Each of the parties tries to narrate the possible agreement in such a way that they show the greatest achievement and the least retreat for themselves.
However, even if a preliminary understanding is reached, it seems that the path of negotiations will continue. Iranian officials have emphasized that after the initial agreement, there will be a negotiation period of about 60 days to reach a final agreement, especially on the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions.
In this video, we review the most important provisions of the agreement based on domestic and foreign media claims.
