The conditions for using passes purchased by foreign students on services operated by the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) will change from June 15, the company announced Thursday.
Starting mid-June, among students holding foreign student ID cards, only those who also have a Hungarian residential address will be eligible to use discounted student Budapest-passes (3,450 forints).
When using foreign student ID cards, it will still be a requirement to hold citizenship of an EU Member State or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. However, in the future, a foreign student ID or proof of citizenship alone will no longer be sufficient to use the discounted pass.
To prove eligibility, an official document confirming their address in Hungary (“lakcímkártya”) or an accommodation certificate (“szálláshely-igazolás”) issued by the Hungarian immigration authorities must be presented in addition to the student ID.
The change also affects ticket and pass sales: at in-person sales points, from June 15, affected foreign students will in all cases be informed of the new conditions, and they will only be able to purchase discounted passes if they can prove they have a Hungarian address, according to the statement.
At ticket vending machines and in mobile ticketing apps, the list of selectable ID types will also be updated:
the system will clearly indicate that, under the above conditions, only students aged at least 14 who have a Hungarian address will be eligible to select the discounted pass option.
The detailed rules are available on the company’s website in BKK’s Terms and Conditions of Business, and in the descriptions of the relevant passes (monthly Budapest-pass for pupils in primary and secondary education and monthly Budapest-pass for students in higher education), the statement said.
