In the communication, the company – based in the Netherlands – recognizes a situation that could affect part of its users and, at the same time, issues a series of recommendations.
As detailed, certain information linked to reservations may have been accessed by unauthorized third parties.
“As of today, based on the results of our investigation, the information that has been accessed could include reservation details, names, emails, addresses, telephone numbers associated with the reservation and any data that has been shared with the accommodation,” the company indicated.
As a first measure, the company pproceeded to change the PIN of the affected reservations.
Furthermore, he warns that eventual phone calls or emails could come from malicious people who try to impersonate the accommodation or the platform itself.
Among the recommendations to his clients are:
“We will never ask you to share your credit card details by email, phone, text message or WhatsApp.”
“We will never ask you to make a bank transfer that does not match the payment conditions indicated in your reservation confirmation.”
“If you receive an email that appears to be from the accommodation or Booking.com, verify its authenticity before clicking on any link.”
Additionally, the company recommends that its users have a antivirus system on your devices to reduce the risk of identity theft.
