Trump could be greatest statesman: KMT’s Cheng

    PEACE PLAN:
While urging the US president to end the zero-sum game with China, Cheng said she has a pragmatic solution to settling cross-strait differences

US President Donald Trump would be the “greatest statesman of the 21st century” if he achieved peace in East Asia with China, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) said on Monday.

Speaking at a seminar held by the Asia Society in New York City, Cheng said that successfully managing relations with Beijing is key to Trump’s agenda of “making America great again.”

Trump should make good use of the two years he has left in his second term, she said, adding that a confrontational stance toward Beijing or war would lead to catastrophic consequences for the US.

She urged Trump to establish mutual trust, exchanges and friendship between the US and China by putting an end to the zero-sum game mentality of the Cold War, and transforming the First Island Chain into a key link to peace and prosperity.

With US leadership, the potential for regional conflict could be changed into cooperation and dialogue that result in an enormous peace bonus, she said.

Cooperation in artificial intelligence is aligned with the interests of all nations in the region and the US, Cheng said.

“Should Trump play a lead role [in this process], he would be a great US president, a great world leader and the greatest statesman of the 21st century,” she said.

Cheng’s visit to the US is prompted by a need for US support in facilitating the KMT’s mission for peace with China, she said.

The EU is an example for a new system that could be developed by both sides of the Taiwan Strait, which would gain popularity among the people by bringing mutual benefits, Cheng said.

Cheng said she has a roadmap to achieve her peace plan, which is the only pragmatic solution to prevent the two sides from settling their differences through coercion or military force.

Anyone seeking to resolve the differences across the Strait through force or coercion would face inevitable failure and pay a heavy price, she added.
