South of the current airport in Ilulissatin Itisuarsuk, you can now see new wooden stairs. The stairs were built by the local contractor, EJ Sanasut ApS, with Avannaata Kommunia as the client.
The stairs go from the road down to the water’s edge. When pontoons arrive in Itisuarsuk, the stairs must act as an access road to the area, says the mayor.

– They must be used by everyone, but not by those employed in fishing. We have nothing against them, but they are close to the airport and therefore cannot be used by fishing vessels due to possible birdlife in the area, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen (S) to Sermitsiaq.
The mayor also said that the facility is located close to the airport and the upcoming international airport and therefore any restrictions regarding security and other matters must be observed in this matter.

The Mayor: I don’t know the price
The top political officer does not have an answer as to how much the long staircase costs the municipality. But he says that the stairs must be paid for from the municipality’s operating funds.
– I don’t know the exact number. But the employees know that. I have to say that when I don’t know.
– But because it has been assessed as something that can be carried out within the operation, the work has been started, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen.
Sermitsiaq has contacted the director of Avannaata Kommunia, Nick Nielsen, after the mayor had referred to the civil service. However, he stated that the question about the price of the stairs should be answered by the director of engineering.
Sermitsiaq has also tried to contact the director of engineering but has not received a reply at the time of writing.
The opposition asks questions about the procedure
Demokraatit’s Niels Erik Bro is a member of the municipal council and the technical committee, and he is concerned about the whole process surrounding the construction of the new staircase:
– I think it is very worrying that you start the project in this way without having a finished budget in place, says Niels Erik Bro to Sermitsiaq.
In his opinion, the matter should have been dealt with in the technical committee, but this has not happened, he says.
The opposition politician is happy that initiatives are being taken, but he also believes that the handling of the case should have been better. For example, by involving the relevant committee and by creating a budget before the case was started.
He also does not know what financial consequences the construction of the stairs will have as a result of the committee not being involved.
– We don’t know where we will end up, and that is, in my opinion, the big problem, says Niels Erik Bro.
