Celebrating that the president Claudia Sheinbaum accept the use of fracking and private investment for gas extraction, the coordinator of the PAN senators, Ricardo Anaya Corteswarned that the “ideological mental cobwebs” of the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador They put Mexican sovereignty at “very serious” risk.
In a media interview, the legislator stressed that “due to López Obrador’s cobwebs, the use of unconventional technologies was prohibited, that is, fracking, and practically all the natural gas we import is imported from the United States. And we must also take into account that we are importing more than 75 percent of the natural gas”.
He pointed out that while other countries have important reserves and storage capacity, Mexico does not.
“To be clear, if tomorrow the United States government were to turn off the natural gas tap, we would only last two days with natural gas in Mexico. And it is impossible in two days to replace that natural gas with ships, because that takes a long time.
“That is, this mental web, this dogmatism of Lopez Obrador that prohibited these unconventional methods also led us to a tremendous absurdity. It turns out that passing the border with the United States, a few meters away, in the Gulf of Mexico itself, the gringos use these methods to extract natural gas and sell it to us,” he noted.
Anaya Cortés said that it is to be celebrated, “even though it has taken eight years, for the government today to understand, first, that there is nothing wrong with using this type of unconventional methods, as long as it is done in strict accordance with environmental standards.

“And second, the urgency for Mexico to produce its own natural gas. In other words, just imagine the risk that the entire Mexican industry is in today due to the fact that the United States could one day close the tap and not allow the entry of natural gas into our country.”
He described it as “incredible” that it has taken the Moreno government eight years and that until now it understands that there is nothing wrong with allowing the private initiative invest their own resources, at their own risk to extract gas, which in any case, according to the Constitution, is property of the nation.
He stated that the path is for Pemex to be able to make alliances with individuals who do have this technology, so that we can extract the gas and then we will be energetically sovereign.
“Our call is to leave these mental cobwebs behind and, of course, celebrate, even if it is truly late, that it has been understood that privatizing does not imply making alliances with private initiative, as they repeated ad nauseam, and that there is nothing wrong with using unconventional methods, as long as it is respectful of the environment,” he insisted.
Ricardo Anaya assured that this change in strategy is an absolute distancing between President Sheinbaum and her predecessor.
He recalled that during López Obrador’s six-year term, when the PAN proposed that the government, through Pemexmade alliances with individuals, the government responded that this is privatizing oil and gas.
“And what we said ad nauseam, and now the Morena government agrees with us, is that this is not privatization, it is allowing individuals to use their resources, their technology, but in the end, according to the Constitution, gas and oil remain property of the nation.
And second, because this refusal to use unconventional methods led us to depend 100% on the United States. I mean, look at the absurdity. Yes, we allow the neighboring country to do so and sell us that same gas, but we tie our hands and do not do it for strictly ideological reasons. This clearly implies a 180 degree turn with respect to the Lopez-Obradorist mental cobwebs,” he concluded.
