The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, represented by the General Administration of Plant Protection, and in coordination with the security services, seized more than 15 tons of prohibited and smuggled pesticides in a warehouse in the Al-Huthaili area in the capital secretariat.
Director of Plant Protection, Engineer Ahmed Al-Kol, explained that the seized quantity exceeds 15,000 liters of banned and restricted pesticides, and contains banned active substances, including: methomyl, bifenthrin, triazophos, profenophos, and methidathione, in addition to restricted-use substances such as mancozeb and ethion.
He pointed out that these pesticides had misleading trade names for more than 60 types, pointing out that they had been investigated and procedures for referring the case to the prosecution had been completed to take legal action against those involved.
He stressed that the General Administration of Plant Protection is implementing an ongoing plan in coordination with the security services to enhance control over the circulation of agricultural pesticides and combat smuggling operations, in a way that contributes to protecting the agricultural sector and reducing the risks resulting from the use of prohibited materials.
He considered that the attempt to introduce this large quantity of prohibited pesticides represents a serious threat to the environment and public health, due to the harm it causes to humans, plants, air, soil and living organisms, in addition to its negative effects on various ecosystems.
The Director of Plant Protection called on dealers in pesticides and agricultural inputs to adhere to the controls and procedures regulating the circulation of pesticides, and to refrain from smuggling or marketing prohibited materials, to avoid legal accountability.
