PARAMARIBO — In the coming period, district administrators will map locations, monuments and historical sites within their work area in connection with August’s Heritage Month. District Commissioner (DC) Ruchsana Ilahibaks (Paramaribo-Central) said this to the Communications Service Suriname (CDS), after she and colleagues attended an information session especially for the DCs in the Congress Hall on Wednesday.
During the session, the DCs were informed by the Heritage Month committee about their role in the organization and implementation of the activities. Ilahibaks revealed that “specific resources” are missing. Yet she sees possibilities. “We have to be creative. That is a challenge, but you can do a lot if you are creative. Perhaps there are also entrepreneurs who want to help us.”
“After August we must no longer look at our differences, but move forward together as Surinamese”
Committee member Diëgo Ooiberg
Committee member Diëgo Ooiberg said about the financing to the CDS that the committee is not responsible for the organization of activities, but for the preparation and coordination. He did express the hope that government, business and sponsors will jointly contribute to successful implementation.
He emphasized that Heritage Month is more than a month of celebration. He called on (young) entrepreneurs to actively contribute. “As a young entrepreneur you can play an important role in initiatives that strengthen the heritage and living environment in the districts.”

DC’s cucial
The fact that a session was held specifically for the district commissioners is because they play a key role in promoting the objectives of Heritage Month within their own districts. “It is important that we as a society promote Heritage Month. If you want to do that from the districts, then the district commissioners are the most important players in transferring this to their environment and society.”
Ooiberg told the CDS that the committee will ensure that all activities are in line with the objectives of Heritage Month. “Everything that will take place in the districts is reviewed by the committee before it goes out. This way we ensure that all activities are in accordance with the committee’s vision.”
Rich cultural heritage
During Heritage Month, strengthening mutual connection and a shared sense of identity is central. The month will provide space for education, awareness and reflection on the rich cultural heritage and diverse backgrounds of all population groups in Suriname.
According to the initiators, Heritage Month should contribute to awareness, connection and national unity. “After August we must no longer look at our differences, but move forward together as Surinamese,” Ooiberg noted.
