The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya has condemned an attempt to target the headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Janzour, after demonstrators, it said were affiliated with the anti-migrants-resettlement movement, breached the compound’s outer walls and gates, arguing that the incident endangered the safety and security of mission personnel.
The institution described the incident as a serious criminal and terrorist act aimed at undermining security and stability and harming Libya’s relations with the international community. It said the breach constituted a violation of the Vienna Convention governing the protection of diplomatic missions.
It held the Interior Ministry of the Government of National Unity legally responsible for what it described as a failure to secure the UN mission’s premises. It added that the demonstration exceeded the scope of the permit granted to organizers, raising suspicions of negligence or possible complicity with those involved in the disturbance, according to the statement.
The institution called on the Attorney General’s Office to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and to prosecute those responsible. It also stressed the need for government authorities to uphold their obligations to protect international and diplomatic missions and prevent any incitement to violence or hatred.
