ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police Rishi Singh says that while the original expansive search for the body of two-year-old Angelo Tobias-Plaza from Goodwood is not ongoing, however, other searches are being conducted once information comes to the police.
“To say the search is called off is not factual,” Singh said.
Angelo’s relatives are planning a memorial service in Tobago as they continue to grieve as his body is yet to be found. A cousin of the child’s mother, Kalifah Tobias, confirmed arrangements are under way although a date has not yet been finalised.
Tobias was detained during the early stages of the investigation but was later released following advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Tobias’ cousin said the young mother has not been coping well. She reported that family members have rallied around her, offering support during this difficult period.
Tobias has since deactivated her Facebook account and has not returned to her Cambridge Trace residence since her release from police custody.
Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine told the media two weeks ago he was unhappy with the police investigation in the matter and stated the police were expected to do better. At a plenary sitting, he said the THA wished to provide training to Tobago officers for future similar cases.
Two-year-old Angelo was reported missing on the night of May 11 from his Cambridge Trace, Goodwood, home.
A massive search involving land, sea and air resources was launched, which included the Tobago police, Fire Service, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management, Coast Guard, Child Protection Unit, Homicide Bureau, Tobago Emergency Management Agency and both Hunters Search and Rescue Team groups.
On May 25, 24-year-old Shannon Miller, Angelo’s stepfather, appeared before a Scarborough court charged with the toddler’s murder. He is expected to reappear before the court on November 30.
