The Sameday courier service and the Easybox network of parcel lockers will completely disappear from Hungary by early fall, Index reported, citing Forbes.
The Sameday courier service, part of the Romanian eMAG Group, is withdrawing from Hungary. The company is gradually winding down its Hungarian operating company, Delivery Solutions Zrt., and laying off its local employees.
eMAG originally intended to sell its Hungarian Sameday division to Express One, which is owned by Austrian Post. The agreement was announced back in the spring.
The previous government ultimately blocked the deal, citing Hungary’s strict regulations on foreign direct investment (FDI). Rather than wait for the rules to be clarified, Sameday decided to pull out entirely.
The newspaper noted that Sameday will not be transferring its network to another party:
the Romanian owner will specifically dismantle the Easybox parcel locker network—comprising more than a thousand units—and remove the network from Hungary.
The downsizing and withdrawal will be a gradual, planned process carried out in compliance with labor laws, meaning employees are promised support exceeding the legal minimum. Based on market information, Sameday will completely cease its operations in Hungary by early fall—expected to be by September.
