Olympiakos Piraeus won its fourth Euroleague trophy on Sunday in Athens basket-ball male and the first after a wait of 13 years, in front of his audience, after defeating real madrid with 92-85 in the last act, writes AFP.
The victory is all the sweeter as it took place in his rival’s OAKA (Olympic) Hall Panathinaikosin which 18,000 spectators took place.
Olympiakos also became the first team to win the Euroleague after finishing first in the regular season since the single-division format was introduced in 2016.
Real Madrid, who hold the record for titles in the competition (11), came close to another major upset when they had a chance to equalize with 13 seconds remaining (85-88) after trailing by 8 points just 10 seconds earlier (80-88).
But Andres Feliz’s 3-pointer bounced off the rim, American Alec Peters recovered the ball and then sealed the victory for the Greeks from the free throw line.
The best players of the new champions were Peters, with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and French defender Evan Fournier, the best scorer of his team (20 points and 4 assists), also named the MVP of the Final Four tournament.
Fournier, who arrived in Piraeus almost two years ago to rediscover his love for the game after 12 years in NBAwon his first international title at 33.
Olympiakos was considered the big favorite against a Real Madrid team that was missing its three pivots (Usman Garuba, Alex Len and Walter Tavares).
In the semifinals, Olympiakos eliminated defending champion Fenerbahce 79-61, and Real Madrid defeated Valencia Basket 105-90.
