According to the online economy report, quoted by ISNA, “OpenAI” announced the launch of a more capable and scalable system for the production of chatbot memory of artificial intelligence “ChatGPT” (ChatGPT), which was developed to deal with the challenges related to obsolescence, correctness and scalability observed when applying its memory.
Memory is what helps ChatGPT learn your preferences, projects, and constraints, allowing future conversations to start from a common ground instead of zero.
Over the past two years, memory has become an important part of ChatGPT’s experience, helping it better understand the user’s desired content so that it can help them achieve meaningful goals over time. This is necessary to make ChatGPT more useful, to help you get to know the user and do more for him.
The update is available today for Plus and Pro users in the US, and will roll out to other countries and Free and Go users in the coming weeks.
ChatJChat Memory, also known as Saved Memories, was first launched in April 2024. This feature allows the user to ask ChatJChat to remember information and transfer it to future conversations.
Stored memories were only written during conversation and relied on strong cues to decide when to activate the memory; Like the instruction “Remember I’m traveling to Singapore in July”. In practice, interacting with this system can be like talking to someone who took a few notes but still forgot everything that wasn’t written down. Also, stored memories become outdated over time and eventually become inaccurate or irrelevant.
OpenAI wrote: In April 2025, we updated ChatGchat’s memory by giving the ability to refer to chat text outside of the saved memory list. This was done by introducing the first version of dreaming, a method for ChatGchat that automatically sorts memory in the background with reference to conversation history.
Unlike cached memories, dreaming uses a background process that allows ChatGchat to learn from multiple conversations and combine the state of ChatGchat’s memory to always provide the most up-to-date and relevant content for the conversation. Also, dreaming makes it easier for the memory to take in the natural content of the conversation without the need for explicit requests to remember something.
Over the past year, the dreaming feature has complemented Saved Memories to provide a step-up in ChatGPT’s ability to personalize responses and counteract the staleness of saved memories. However, it has historically never been sufficient as a stand-alone memory system.
OpenAI wrote: We are launching a memory architecture with more efficient capabilities and computations built on dreaming.
The memory information that is combined through dreaming can be browsed through a summary of them that can be seen on the Memory Summary page. From the Memory Summary page, you can quickly summarize the highlights of what ChatGchat knows about you, add or update information about yourself, and provide instructions on what topics ChatGchat should cover and when. If you want to learn more about a specific area, just talk to the model.
