BABY Sawong Kevin, with his parents Kevin Mitial and Fetima Tinggar have returned to the country.
Sawong was born in Morobe last October.
He was attached to his brother Tom, at the chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Tom passed away during the surgery in Australia to separate the twins.
Australian High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Ewen McDonald said: “I am honoured by the role Australia has been able to play in Sawong’s journey, working with a wide range of partners to facilitate Sawong’s care at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network.
“At the same time, I acknowledge and pay my respects to Sawong’s late twin brother, Tom, who sadly gave his life for Sawong to live.
“The resilience of Sawong, his parents, and his family, and community over the past months has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“Sawong has risen to each challenge with determination and shown remarkable tenacity and strength.
“I extend my sincere thanks to all those who have made this moment possible: family, friends, church and community members, the exceptional healthcare professionals both in PNG and Australia, generous individuals and donors which contributed financial and in-kind support, and many others who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
“As we celebrate Sawong’s return, Australia also reaffirms our commitment to work in partnership with PNG to support a bright future for children across the country.”
