Often, many things in the world cannot be changed. But you can change your attitude towards difficulties and life in general. Some people seem to be born optimists. They seem to easily overcome difficulties and do not mourn the hardships of life.
However, this perspective is actually a skill that can be learned. As psychiatrist Sue Varma notes, there is a “practical optimism” that can change life for the better even in the most difficult times, Huffpost reports.
Case study
Earlier in her career, Sue served as the director of a mental health program for survivors of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City. Many of the victims struggled with depression, PTSD and anxiety, which is quite understandable.
The psychiatrist was really surprised by the number of people who sought mental health evaluations after the tragedy, but usually didn’t complain of any specific problems.
A doctor asked one such patient about the secret of her endurance. She admitted that she became an activist after the terrorist attack and helped victims who had developed panic disorder as a result of the experience. She had a clear goal of helping others and worked towards it. And that helped her cope.
Focus on action
Don’t confuse practical optimism with toxic optimism optimism. A sane person will not turn a blind eye to the real circumstances and deceive himself into thinking that everything is wonderful when it is not.
The essence of practical optimism is a realistic approach, a sober assessment of the pros and cons of the situation. It leads to a specific, thoughtful action or decision.
Imagine you were tested cholesterol leveland the results were poor. A toxic optimist would turn a blind eye to them and believe that everything will work itself out. A pessimist would think they are doomed to fail and avoid making a doctor’s appointment. In the end, both will risk their health, writes Huffpost.
But a practical optimist will consider the situation and take the concrete steps necessary to solve the problem.
