The seismologists are reassuring about the successive earthquakes that occurred around one in the afternoon in North Evia and caused damage to old houses and problems in the road network due to landslides.
It is noted that the first, strong tremor was recorded at 12:58 in the afternoon and according to the Geodynamic Institute, it had a magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located six kilometers southwest of Prokopio Evia and the focal depth was only 14 kilometers, which explains why the earthquake was particularly felt in the basin of Attica.
Other earthquakes followed in the same area with the highest one intensity 5.2 Richter and the weaker 2.7 Richter.
Speaking to kathimerini.gr, the president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas he said that “based on the data of the region, we usually have such earthquakes in Dafnousa, Mantoudi and Prokopi, that is, earthquakes reaching 5.1 and 5.2 Richter. These are earthquakes without particularly large magnitudes, but with seismicity that lasts several days.”
However, he clarified that “he does not see any major earthquake or some big event, pointing out that citizens should be careful with old houses.”
For his part, the seismologist and Research Director of the Geodynamic Institute, Athanasios Ganasstated that “according to history, the Prokopio area does not produce earthquakes above 5.5 Richter. Both tremors caused damage mainly to old buildings and landslides in the road network.
Mr. Ganas also appeared reassuring saying that “we have no reason to be particularly worried, we will monitor the phenomenon for 48 hours as we have entered a post-seismic sequence. We are not talking about an area with large faults such as Atalanti, Kefallinia and the Hellenic Arc”.
The Fire Services in Attica and Evia are on increased alert
According to a statement from the Fire Department, all Civil Protection forces were mobilized immediately.
So far the Fire Department Operations Center has not received calls to extricate people.
By order of the Chief of the Fire Department, Lieutenant General Theodoros Vaya, the Fire Services in Attica and Evia as well as the 1st and 7th E.M.A.K. have been put on heightened alert.
Also, 20 vehicles with their crews from the Fire Services of Evia are patrolling the wider area carrying out checks on the road network in cooperation with the Hellenic Police, while a search and rescue team of the 7th EMAK goes to the area of the seismic vibrations as a precaution.
