Allegations of settling migrants in Libya are not true: ‎UNSMIL

‎The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) issued a statement last Thursday (4 June) saying it has taken note of the demonstrations held in front of its headquarters and the headquarters of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The United Nations affirmed the right of all Libyans to receive correct information and their right to express their opinions peacefully in accordance with Libyan and international laws. Peaceful expression and dialogue are essential to addressing public concerns; ‎

‎The mission also expressed concern about the spread of disinformation, misinformation and hate speech about the UN’s work in Libya, which has contributed to increased tensions and incitement against national and international UN staff. ‎

‎The UN reiterated that in Libya none of its agencies, including UNHCR, are implementing any programmes to resettle migrants in Libya, and all allegations to the contrary are completely unfounded.

It stressed that the UNHCR, in cooperation with the Libyan authorities and the international community, in full respect of Libya’s sovereignty, is working to find solutions outside Libya for people fleeing war, conflict and persecution, including evacuation to third countries, and voluntary return to their countries when circumstances permit. ‎

‎The Mission strongly condemned any incitement to violence or threats against United Nations personnel, as well as acts of sabotage and/or attacks on its personnel, headquarters and property. There is no justification for violence or intimidation, which we know is not in line with Libyan culture, traditions and values. The mission calls on all parties to respect the inviolability of United Nations headquarters, personnel, property and assets in accordance with international law. ‎

‎The mission expressed its appreciation to the relevant authorities in Tripoli for their efforts in maintaining public order and ensuring the safety and security of the demonstrators, as well as United Nations personnel and facilities.‎
