Republican People’s Party (CHP) Zonguldak deputy Deniz Yavuzyılmaz shared with the public the scandal regarding the new tower built by the AKP at Ankara Esenboğa Airport. Yavuzyılmaz said that due to the incorrect construction of 4 large columns and 2 balcony entrances in the new tower, the views of the runways were blocked, and therefore the new tower could not be used properly. Criticizing the Minister of Transport, Abdülkadir Uraloğlu, CHP’s Yavuzyılmaz said, “The Minister gives interviews and poses in front of these incorrectly designed columns in the new tower.”
MAJOR SECURITY VULNERABILITY
Stating that the tower, which was opened by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 19, 2026, has not been fully used for 4 months, Yavuzyılmaz said, “Air traffic controllers, who need to see every millimeter of the runways clearly, are now literally blindfolded. For a newly built tower, it is a terrible architectural mistake, inspection and security weakness!” He included his statements. According to International Aviation Standards (ICAO-Annex14), controllers in the tower are required to see the aircraft on the runways and maneuvering areas uninterruptedly and with the naked eye.
Controllers can’t see the end of the runway
Yavuzyılmaz from CHP listed the problems experienced by air controllers due to design errors in giant columns as follows:
-Can only see the beginning of a runway
-Cannot see the area where the planes are accelerating
-If he can see the middle part of the runway, he cannot see the end of the same runway.
-If the wind is blowing from the other direction, this time he cannot see the runway head,
-If he can see the middle of the track, this time he cannot see the side towards the end of the track. Complete incompetence!
