The Ministry of Transport and Communications organized the “Cyclethon” event to celebrate World Bicycle Day, which falls on June 3rd of each year, in cooperation with the Bahrain Cycling Federation and the Baraka Movement Authority, and with the participation of a number of officials, cycling practitioners, and those interested in sustainable transportation.

On this occasion, Dr. Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Communications, confirmed that the Ministry continues to implement projects and initiatives to develop the infrastructure that supports transportation by bicycle, by expanding the establishment of designated paths and enhancing their integration within new urban and housing projects, which contributes to providing a safe and stimulating environment for the use of bicycles and consolidating the culture of sustainable transportation in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He pointed out that the bicycle path in Salman City, which was completed with high efficiency and in record time, constitutes one of the most prominent models of modern infrastructure supporting sustainable transportation in the Kingdom. He explained that the design of the path took into account the application of the best international practices in terms of safety and sustainability standards and quality of implementation, ensuring a safe and integrated user experience for all age groups, and contributing to strengthening community cohesion and motivating community members to adopt healthier and more sustainable lifestyles, in line with the goals of modern urban development in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

He explained that celebrating World Bicycle Day represents an opportunity to introduce the growing role of the bicycle as a practical and healthy option for transportation, and to encourage community members to adopt more sustainable modes of transportation, thus contributing to supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

For her part, Fatima Abdullah Al-Dhaen, Undersecretary for Land Transport and Post at the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, expressed her pride in the success achieved by the event and the wide participation it enjoyed, stressing that the transportation sector is paying increasing attention to integrating active means of transportation (Active!Mobility) within the integrated transportation system in the Kingdom.

She also appreciated the efforts of partners from government and private agencies and civil society organizations in supporting the Ministry’s initiatives aimed at consolidating the principles of sustainability.

The event included a bicycle tour on the Salman Housing City bicycle paths, in addition to a number of awareness-raising and interactive activities aimed at spreading awareness of the importance of sustainable mobility and encouraging the use of bicycles.

This event comes as an extension of a series of initiatives implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in partnership with relevant authorities, in support of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts in the field of environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality and raising indicators for sustainable development goals.
