According to Greenland Airports, SAS has stated that the airline has not permanently canceled the route to Nuuk.
Customers who have bought a ticket for SAS flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen, are told these days that the flights have been cancelled.
It is only 11 months ago that Greenland Airports and SAS were able to celebrate the first flight to Nuuk, and the announcement from SAS about the cancellations also angers commercial director at Greenland Airports, René Von Ahm Laursen:
“It is of course a shame that SAS has chosen not to carry out the flights to Nuuk in the 2026 summer season,” says the commercial director in a written response to Sermitsiaq.
Not talking about a permanent closure
The director refers to the fact that SAS itself has stated that the decision has been made, among other things, on the basis of rising fuel prices and demand conditions:
“At the same time, we understand that airlines currently operate in an international market, where ongoing adjustments to route networks and capacity are part of reality,” says René Von Ahm Laursen.
According to the director, there will be no question of a permanent closure of the route:
“We have had a good and constructive dialogue with SAS, who have stated that there is no question of a permanent closure of the route, and that Nuuk continues to be included in their planning until 2027.”
Don’t budge on expectations
SAS should have flown three times a week to and from Nuuk during the summer months, but cancellations do not cause Greenland Airports to waver in its belief in the development of passenger traffic:
“From Greenland Airports’ side, it does not change our expectations for the overall traffic development, and we continue to have great faith in the development of the Greenlandic market and the increasing international interest in Greenland as a destination,” says René Von Ahm Laursen.
Air Greenland has inserted extra departures
He writes that Greenland Airports is pleased that other airlines are expanding their activities in Nuuk this summer.
At Greenland Airport’s largest customer, Air Greenland, director of sustainability and communication, Inga Dora G. Markussen, confirms that the company is following the situation closely regarding the canceled SAS flights, and that Air Greenland has introduced some extra flights over the summer.
