This is the reason why some people sleep badly: Even our ancestors knew that this object should not be kept in the bedroom

There are things that people have been doing intuitively for centuries, long before science tried to explain them. One of them is covering the mirror during the night.

In many cultures, it was believed that the mirror u the bedroom it disturbs the peace, sleep and energy of the space. Today, in the era of interiors full of glass surfaces and huge closet doors with mirrorsthat old rule becomes a topic again – but this time through the prism of psychology, biology and sleep quality.

Why can a mirror opposite the bed affect sleep?

The arrangement of furniture in the bedroom is not only an aesthetic issue. Psychologists and sleep experts have long warned that the space in which we sleep directly affects the nervous system, stress level and depth of rest. And a mirror placed directly opposite the bed is often at the top of the list of things that can disturb the feeling of security during the night.

The problem is not “mysticism”, but the way the human brain reacts to movement, light and reflections – even while we sleep. Our eyes register light and shadow changes even through closed eyelids, and the brain remains partially “alert”. When movements, light from the street or even the outline of the body are reflected in the mirror while turning in a dream, the organism can interpret this as the presence of another person in the room, he writes. Cosmopolitan.si.

This activates a slight but constant alertness of the body, increases the level of cortisol and makes it difficult to enter a deep sleep.

Symptoms that many associate with the mirror in the bedroom

People who sleep in front of large mirrors often describe similar problems:

waking up between three and four in the morning for no apparent reason,
feeling nervous or uneasy as soon as they enter the room,
the impression that “they are never completely rested”,
more intense dreams or the feeling that someone is watching them.

Of course, the mirror is not the only cause of bad sleep, but experts say that it can be one of the factors that further stimulate the brain in a space that should be completely soothing.

The problem of modern wardrobes with mirrors

In the past, mirrors were mostly small and separated from the bed. Today, huge sliding wardrobe surfaces with mirrors have become a standard in modern apartments, especially in smaller spaces where they visually “open” the room.

However, it is precisely those large mirrors that can be problematic because they reflect the entire space – including the bed and the sleeping person.

If the mirror cannot be removed, experts advise a few simple tricks:

covering the mirror with a light curtain at night,
    installation of decorative matte foil,
changing the angle of the bed so that the body is not seen in the reflection,
using a mirror on the inside of the closet.
Where is the best place for a mirror?

The most important rule is simple: the mirror should not be in your direct line of sight while lying in bed.

That’s why many interior designers today recommend that mirrors be placed to the side, inside the closet or in the wardrobe, and not directly across from the sleeping area.

After all, maybe the ancients knew something after all

Although modern science does not talk about “bad energy” in the way that old beliefs did, the fact is that space affects the psyche much more than we think. The bedroom should be a place of minimal stimulation — free of bright lights, screens and reflections that can keep the brain on alert.

Sometimes just moving one object is enough to make sleep more peaceful.
