In the German state of Saxony, the six-month legal waiting period for 10 sealed gold bars, whose owner is unknown and found in the middle of the meadow, has expired.
It was a routine day last October in Bannewitz, a quiet Saxon town south of Dresden. A municipal (and wastewater treatment) worker was mowing the lawn near a rainwater catchment when he noticed something glittering among the freshly cut grass.
The worker found 8 small packages, sealed in special packaging, scattered in a fan shape among the grass.
Public order office teams arrived at the scene and discovered 2 more packages during their search.
The market value of these gold bars, 10 in total and weighing approximately 28 grams each, was determined to be 40,000 euros.
The distribution pattern alerted the police
The fact that the ingots were scattered in a fan shape in the middle of the meadow raised questions from the very beginning. This messy arrangement gave rise to the possibility that the gold coins might have been thrown from a moving vehicle.
Law enforcement authorities thoroughly investigated whether the gold was linked to a police pursuit, theft, or other criminal enterprise, but no traces of the bars consistent with any criminal activity were found in the bars stored in the police evidence room in Dresden.
Some people said, “It fell out of my pocket”, and some said, “Drone Cargo”…
According to German civil law (Fundrecht), the original owner of a lost property of this scale is given exactly 6 months to file a claim.
This legal period for Bannewitz gold expired on April 17, 2026.
According to the statements of Mayor Heiko Wersig, between 12 and 15 false applications came to the town during this period. Here are some of those interesting claims:
One person claimed the bars fell out of his pocket while he was hiking.
Another argued that the gold was the hidden cargo of a drone that malfunctioned and crashed in the area.
A local resident approached the mayor at a bakery and said that these gold coins might be the work of a gang that defrauded his grandmother.
The one without the receipt could not prove it
Researchers tried to access purchasing records by following the serial numbers and manufacturer information on the sealed packages, but a clear name could not be identified. Therefore, the city required applicants to provide purchase receipts matching these serial numbers. All bets were lost when no one could produce a receipt.
Gold will serve collectively
With the expiration of the legal period, the gold worth 40,000 euros has now officially become the property of the Bannewitz municipality. Mayor Wersig said, “I don’t want to keep anything that doesn’t belong to me,” and announced that this income would be distributed to local non-governmental organizations and community organizations.
The first proposal discussed in the parliament was to give a gold bar to each of the 10 community organizations and for the organizations to either sell or keep these bars. The town council will make its final decision in the coming weeks on exactly how this money will be divided for the benefit of the town.
