A measure to block President Trump from ordering more strikes on Iran was narrowly defeated along party lines, 214-213, with one House lawmaker voting present and three Republicans abstaining. A similar resolution failed in the Senate Wednesday, even as some Republicans raised increasing concerns about Congress’s lack of input on the war. Democrats have forced votes on three other war powers resolutions since the war’s start, all of which have failed.
Vote results
Only one Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden (Maine), voted against the resolution. The House most recently rejected a similar war powers resolution on March 5, when two Republicans supported it with most Democrats. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 — the law Democrats are using to force the votes — requires presidents to remove U.S. forces from any conflict that Congress has not authorized within 60 days. That deadline is May 1.
