PARAMARIBO — During the ‘Meet the Judge’ campaign, pupils and students from 32 schools received visits from judges or visited magistrates in the past school year. Schools of all levels are offered the opportunity to become acquainted with the judges and the work of the judiciary. “The information is conveyed directly by the judges to the pupils and students, allowing them to learn more about the judiciary, the role of the judge and the importance of the rule of law in an accessible and interactive way,” it explains.
By bringing school children into direct contact with judges, they are given the opportunity to ask questions and share their opinions, according to the Judiciary of Suriname. A role play is also part of the meeting, where the pupils experience for themselves how a lawsuit proceeds and what role the various parties involved have in it.

The Court of Justice aims to make pupils and students aware of the law and the judiciary in Suriname through the (school) visits. She also hopes to interest more students in studying law and choosing the profession of judge.
The ‘Meet the Judge’ campaign was launched in May 2024 by the Court of Justice in the context of 155 years of the Judiciary of Suriname. The first schools visited were the Sint Paulusschool (May) and the Sint Louiseschool (June). The General Secondary School, Kangaroo High and the Hendrik School followed in July.
The campaign was resumed in January this year. On its own website, the Suriname Judiciary reports that 59 schools had registered. “We hope to see the other schools in the new school year at school or at one of our courthouses,” it is noted.
