September 17 fell Sermersooq Circuit Court verdict in a case where a 21-year-old man from Tasiilaq was convicted of several very serious crimes.
The court found it proven that the man committed attempted murder in April 2025, attacking his sleeping brother with a knife and stabbing him several times.
According to the indictment, the brother suffered a punctured lung, but he received prompt medical attention and thus got out of the situation with his life intact.
The court also convicted the 21-year-old man of rape committed against two different 13-year-old girls and violence against two other people.
The young man was charged with additional matters relating to a violation of a very young girl, but was acquitted of that part.
The result of it all was a sentence of five years in the institution, according to prosecutors in the case. It was not possible for Sermitsiaq himself to follow the case in the circuit court.
The prosecution elaborates that the court has found mitigating circumstances for the sentence.
Apart from the attempted murder in 2025, a very long time has passed since the incidents for which the man is now convicted. Both rapes thus took place in 2022.
It also counted as a mitigating circumstance that the man was under 18 years old at the time of the crime.
Neither the convicted man nor the prosecution wanted to appeal the case. The circuit court’s decision is thus final.
