Police have charged a 21-year-old Belize City man with the murder of 17-year-old Kaylon Trevor David.
According to a police statement, Louis Maxwell Matthews, a Belizean welder of Belize City, was formally arrested and charged with murder on Saturday.
Kaylon was walking along Iguana Street Extension in Belize City on Thursday evening when a gunman opened fire, police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.
ACP Hilberto Romero, head of the National Crimes Investigation Branch, said Friday that police were reviewing video footage and had one suspect in custody. Police believe the killing grew out of a conflict involving young men in the area, and say Kaylon and others had exchanged threats. They have not said what started the dispute. Police say Kaylon had no criminal record.
Kaylon’s older sister, Kensasha David, described him as “the life of the party” and said the family’s home “will never be the same again.”
