EAST RUTHERFORD – France convincingly qualified for the eighth finals of the World Cup on Tuesday evening. Les Bleus defeated Sweden in the New York New Jersey Stadium with clear figures: 3-0. The team of national coach Didier Deschamps continues to impress and awaits a meeting with Paraguay in the next round.
France had most of the ball from kick-off and dictated the tempo. Sweden tried to become dangerous in transition through the fast attackers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, but the French defense hardly gave away any chances.
The ban was broken just before half-time by Kylian Mbappé, who gave the French team a deserved 1-0 lead. Shortly after the restart, Bradley Barcola doubled the margin after a flowing attack, after which Mbappé scored his second goal of the evening to make the final score 3-0.
With the victory, France once again underlines its status as one of the favorites for the world title. The French also won all three of their group matches and have scored no fewer than thirteen times in their first four World Cup matches.
For Sweden the tournament ends in the sixteenth finals. The Scandinavians offered good resistance in phases, but ultimately lacked quality against the strong French offensive line.
In the eighth finals, France will face surprise winner Paraguay, which eliminated Germany on penalties a day earlier.
