After the establishment of the “Safe City” system, in just five months, the number of traffic fatalities has decreased by 40 percent, said today the Minister of the Interior, Panče Toškovski. As Toškovski pointed out in the report on the work done, 33 dead people were recorded, compared to 55 in the same period of the previous year.
From February 2 to June 22, 2026, over 120,000 traffic violations were registered through “Safe City”, of which over 95 percent related to exceeding the permitted speed.
– “Safe City” was a project that was only talked about for years. We realized it. It included modernization of the existing system in Skopje, Tetovo, Kumanovo, corridors 8 and 10 and its expansion at the national level, through the introduction of modern technologies for video surveillance and automatic detection of traffic violations. The initial results of the functioning of the system are particularly significant. From the beginning of its application, on February 2, 2026, in the first five months, a decrease in the number of people killed in traffic accidents was recorded by 40 percent, that is, 33 people died, compared to 55 in the same period of the previous year. Until June 22, 2026, more than 120,000 traffic violations have been registered through the system, of which more than 95 percent refer to exceeding the permitted speed – informs Toškovski.
With the predicted dynamics, by the end of 2026 it is expected that the “Safe City” project will be fully implemented on the territory of the country, covering the larger cities and main road routes, which will lay the foundations of a modern, efficient and preventively oriented system for protecting the safety of citizens. in the report on the work done in the past two years, reports MIA.
