Carnival fever is rising and set to kick-start arguably the most celebrated season of the year in Belize. The highly anticipated Carnival King and Queen Competition is set to take place this Saturday at the Belize City Civic Center.
Spectators can look forward to seeing junior and senior revellers bring out their colourful creations to the stage ahead of this year’s carnival parade in September.

But behind the feathers, glitter and grand costumes are weeks of painstaking preparation and countless late nights for the bands competing for the coveted titles.
Band leader Samantha Soberanis of the Collet Reveller Junior Mas Band says preparation often means starting over more than once.
“The body pieces and head pieces, those might take us less time but in terms of King and Queen, that’s hours,” Soberanis said. “You stay pay attention to details; you might start one way, and you step back and look at your costume and say ‘that nuh fit deh, i nuh like that’ and you go back and rip off and start all over.”
Pre-judging begins at 5:00pm, with the main show starting at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
