The University of Belize has taken what it describes as a historic step toward international accreditation that could strengthen the global recognition of its degrees and boost opportunities for students and faculty.
UB announced on Monday that it has officially submitted its Application for Accreditation Candidacy to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the body that accredits higher education institutions across the United States and parts of the Caribbean.
“This is a historic day for the University of Belize,” said President Dr Vincent Palacio. “Our submission represents the culmination of years of work to strengthen our academic and administrative systems and position UB to meet internationally recognised standards of excellence. Today, we have taken a decisive step toward our vision of becoming an internationally accredited university.”
The application involved strengthening UB’s institutional effectiveness framework, faculty credentialing, and academic and administrative policies and quality assurance across the institution.
However, candidacy is not accreditation itself. SACSCOC will now review the application and, if UB meets the required standards, authorise a Candidacy Committee visit to the university’s campus. Only after that stage can the commission grant or deny candidacy status, a process that precedes full membership and accreditation.
