In the European arrest warrant issued by the Belgian authorities against him Dimitris Avramopoulou it is reported that he violated conditions under which the Ethics Committee of the European Commission gave a positive opinion in order to offer his services to the NGO “Fight Impunity” by Antonio Pancheri.
In particular, he breached the condition that for a period of two years after his departure from the European Commission, he was not allowed to exercise influence or lobbying activities in matters falling within the competences he had during his term as European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship.
The former commissioner went to Doha at the invitation of Eva Kaili, in order to participate in meetings with Qatari officials. The object of these contacts, according to the Belgian authorities, was to promote the issue of visa liberalization for Qatari citizens.
Also, the warrant states that Dimitris Avramopoulos was the only member of the Honorary Board of the NGO who received a fee for his participation.
Interlocutors of Dimitris Avramopoulos describe what is mentioned in the warrant as non-existent, noting, for example, that the trip to Doha was not about lobbying on the issue of visas, but that he had traveled to Qatar to attend the Doha Security Forum in order to talk about security and human rights issues.
