Mayon Volcano, located in the Albay province of the Philippines and known for its perfect conical structure, broke its long silence with a violent explosion. While the sky turned black in the region south of the capital Manila, the ashes erupted from the volcano turned many villages and agricultural lands into ruins.
6 KILOMETER DEATH LINE: EVACUATIONS HAVE STARTED
Following the increase in activity in the volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alarm level. Authorities declared the 6-kilometer area centered around the crater as a “dangerous area” and ordered the evacuation of all settlements within this line. While evacuated citizens were directed to temporary shelter centers, air traffic in the region came to a halt due to ash clouds.

Volcanic ash spread by the wind after the eruption turned the surrounding towns into ghost towns. In the region where visibility drops to a few meters in places, authorities issued vital warnings to the public to wear masks and not to go out unless necessary. Military units were put on alert for cleaning and rescue efforts in the settlements buried under layers of ash.
MOBILITY MAY CONTINUE
Experts, who continue their investigations in the region, emphasized that the seismic activity in the volcano is still high. While it was stated that volcanic eruptions and lava flows may continue in the coming days, the public was asked to be alert against the risk of a possible “mega eruption”. The government signaled that the evacuation area could be expanded depending on the extent of the crisis in the region.
